I thoroughly enjoy reading wrestling books - love the sport/entertainment and love learning about the history of it. Most of the time, books written by a wrestler tend to be their autobiography and can be divided into two parts - the history of said wrestler and backstage stories. The former is fine if you truly love the wrestler and want to know more about him/her. Usually, I don't really care about who Chris Jericho has dated or Mick Foley's visits to children's hospitals. It just doesn't interest me. What I want are backstage stories about wrestling and/or wrestlers. That's what makes Dutch Mantell's "The World According to Dutch" so enthralling to me - it's nothing but backstage stories. He doesn't bore me describing how he met his wife or what happened the first time he took his kid to Disneyland or the bickering that went on in his house growing up. It's written as if you just sat down next to him at a bar and asked him random questions on wrestling as you drank the night away. That's not say this is a perfect book. There seems to be no ghost writer here nor is there much editing period - it's written in blog form with, maybe, one round of proofreading. Second, if you really want to know more about Dutch outside of wrestling, look elsewhere. Third, although I happened to like this, there is no rhyme or reason behind any of the chapters nor is there any coherent narrative here. One chapter is about the formation of the TNA, another about meeting the Undertaker, another about Macho Man and a police dog, etc... It truly is just random stories, for better or worse.
Overall it's a fun, quick read with plenty of stories to keep most wrestling fans interested.

The World According To Dutch Dutch Mantell Ric Gross Mark James 9781449953416 Books Reviews
Just finished the book, and I have to say,It's a classic. If you wanted to know what some of these folks go through in the crazy world of wrestling, this book is for you.Sort of does what 'The wrestler"did in the movie, except the book goes behind the scenes so you can look through the eye's of Dutch and he "Shares" his "...thoughts" with us as well.I was with Dutch as he wrestled in that Prison,as me and my father were the "ring crew".Yes,i thought and wondered the same of our cousin,Jerry Jarrett,"why would he book wrestling at a..PRISON?!"..
Dutch, you have literally done/seen it all.Glad you survived "the ride".Let's just hope it isn't over. Thanks for bringing back the memories!

After reading all the stellar reviews on this book, I spent the $23, or whatever it was to order it. I found it to be just OK. It has a bit of humor in it, and some cheesy one liners, and some decent stories from the "old" days, but that's about it. Maybe I just pumped myself up for it after the reviews, and was let down just a tiny bit. It also kinda perturbed me that Dutch tries to sell signed copies of this for like $20 more, I mean c'mon man, you are lucky we are buying your book with it's already high price tag, but now we have to pay for your signature too?! WTF!
"Dirty Dutch" turned out one fantastic book. Let me clarify Dutch did not write a great wrestling book, he wrote a great book. Whether you're a hardcare fan, a casual fan, or just somebody who wants to read about the wild world of professional wrestling, you will enjoy this book.
Covering his career from the early days in Florida all the way to his stint behind the scenes in TNA, Dutch writes with genuine wit and just a little bit of southern charm...just a little. Dutch's voice is pitch perfect. He gives us just enough detail, without ever being pedantic. Dutch treats his craft with respect, but avoids ever drifting into the realm of self-importance that you find in other wrestling books. And there is plenty of humor to be found. I laughed out loud many a time.
I think what I loved most about this book is the way Dutch allows the reader to get to know him and invites us all to hear a little bit about his life. You will get to hear plenty of stories both behind the curtain and inside the ring, but without the grating, ax-to-grind cynicism that populates the literary efforts of his many brethren.
The feeling this book left me with was the hope that Dutch decides to give us a second volume. I'm certain he has some more stories to share. While I will gladly read them for free on his blog, I wouldn't want Dutch's bank account to suffer. Besides, the money for the next book will undoubtedly be as well spent as the dollars paid for the first. Thanks Dutch!
I've always loved Dutch's work on commentary in Smoky Mountain and the all too brief run behind the mic in WCW. When I heard the Dutchman would be putting out a book - I instantly joined the mailing list and waited with great eagerness for it to arrive. Hands down one of the best wrestling books out there. The book reads like you're sitting in the car with the Dirty Dutchman driving down the highway and he's right there with you telling you his stories.
My biggest complaint? IT ENDED!! Clearly Dutch knew that by putting this out then everyone would want another book..and then another..and another. Well he has me hooked that's for sure.
I just hope in the next one Dutch gives us his thoughts on such TNA "classics" as the Reverse Battle Royale or the epic Barbed Wire Christmas Tree match - I have a feeling his take on those are just priceless.
I must admit to not being very aware of Dutch Mantell so I bought this book with some trepidation as I thought it could have been fairly dull.
Turns out that Dutch Mantell is one great story-teller! He has been around the smaller territories (not counting a fairly brief WWF managerial run) for many years and has worked behind the scenes at TNA.
Mantell is a natural at telling stories of places, events and people that he has met with humour and at times, drama. He spends a chapter on his dealings with Steve Austin, The Undertaker and Kane before all three were famous. This is one of the better sections of the book (especially with Austin) and if Mantell did nothing else in the business, his contribution to these three men alone would make him a legend.
Looking forward to his next book and hope there are more to come from Dutch.
