The novel, "Jonah," consists of two novellas written specifically for people who live in a post-911 America and who no longer see hope in a watered down, same-o same-o religion.

The main character in the first novella, "Jeremiah," has his dreams wrecked by a late night visitation with an angel. Then, he receives a prophetic message for San Francisco. Will the city heed Jeremiah's warning or is the city doomed?

In the second novella, "Jonah," two prophets receive identical messages for the West Coast. Though each faces different struggles, it comes down to whether or not the people believe the prophets' words. If the prophetic words are ignored, what will happen?

Fiction or prophecy? Time will soon reveal the answer to all of us.

Jonah - edition by Larry Nevenhoven. Religion & Spirituality eBooks @ . Reviews

I write with great excitement for my cousins book, but also know God is a loving and faithful watchman over His flock
Plus he has a heart for the Lord and other people. Read this! It is two novellas about being a prophet (suffering and loving) today.
Good book to read, to be ready for the unexpected. Easy to follow in the book with another book in this book called jeremiah. both excellent
Jonah is quick read consisting of two novellas the first titled Jeremiah and the second titled Jonah. Although the subject matter could not be more serious, I found them highly enjoyable.

Jeremiah grew up in San Francisco, has a beautiful girlfriend, is immersed in his life as a college student at a Bay area university--plus, he has a future in the family business. Then he meets Jesus and God asks him to become a mouthpiece, a prophet who speaks a message of judgment to the sinful city of his origin. Nothing about this makes sense to the young man, and he knows people will not receive his message--not even those he loves. Perhaps few are called to pay the high price for following God as the Biblical Jeremiah, or the young man we meet. I wondered how Nevenhoven would bring things to a conclusion and I wasn't disappointed.

Likewise with Jonah. The second novella is divided into two parts, and the four chapters of the first part parallel chapters of the Biblical book. An original background created by the author leads to Jonah's call as a prophet. Then there's the trip to the sea (represented by Houston) as well as time on a ship and time in a whale (you'll haver to read the book yourself to discover what they are). Finally, Jonah travels to San Francisco to delivers God's message. And although this is the same San Francisco that Jeremiah spoke to, this time the city is unfamiliar or foreign to the prophet. But when he brings the message to key people, they repent. And if that seems too obvious, it doesn't play out that way. The final chapter, when Jonah is angry because God did what Jonah knew God would do, brings the reader back to the first chapter. Again, compelling.

The second part of this novella was the crowning touch. We meet a third prophet--Nahum. I knew little about the obscure Biblical book of that name, and Nahum is very different personality than Jeremiah or Jonah. He was called to the prophetic office as a young child; arguments with God about his job were settled long ago. His struggles are not those of a man newly called but of a man fully seasoned. But his audience in San Francisco is different than audiences of his previous experiences. He feels pain caused by the people's rejection not so much for himself as for those who will experience judgment when they fail to respond to God's opportunity.

I didn't give the five stars only because character development was not as complex as it could be. Not what I require for a top rating. (I wouldn't give most modern best-sellers five stars.) Nevertheless, it was a great read. Highly recommended.
