This was a great fantasy story set in a steampunky sort of world. Taya is an icarus who flies on metal wings and is made more buoyant by carrying blocks of ondinium. She works as a messenger in this society which is rigidly sorted into castes. She is part of a caste that than mingle with all castes. She has dreams of being a diplomat who travels to other lands.One day she rescues two members of the Exalted caste who are in a wireferry accident and is attacked coming back from her sister's wedding by spies from Alzana who would like her wings. She is saved by a mysterious clockwright who is an exile from the Exalted class. Pretty soon she is up to the tips of her wings in the danger and intrigue that is growing in her city.
There are two men involved with her. Alister Forlore sits on the governing council and is one of the foremost programmers of the Great Engine that runs the city. His brother Cristof is the clockwright who rescues her. Alister is the more attractive being a man filled with charm and smooth words. Cristof lacks his brother's charm but has the benefit of being honest.
When it appears that terrorists have killed Alister and his brother-in-law - the husband and father of the people Taya rescued from the wireferry accident, Taya and Cristof band together to investigate the murders.
I loved the relationship between Taya and Cristoff. I loved the world. Who - besides Cristof who is afraid of heights - hasn't had dreams of flying? Taya has a great job! I liked Cristof's determination to go his own way and his love for his brother.
Luckily, this is the first book of a trilogy and I have the other two on my Kindle. I can't wait to see what happens next for these characters.

I found an excerpt of this in Lightspeed Magazine. My curiosity was peaked and I took the chance and bought the edition. Was I happy I did! The steampunk inventiveness of the Odinium society as well as the characters from each caste system was well developed. I found the Icarii especially fascinating. Who has not wanted wings to fly? I would not regard this as sci-fi but more fantasy. It is an enjoyable read and I would recommend this book to anyone.
This is by far one of the best steampunk novels I've ever read. The world building is top notch and I absolutely loved the characters. The mystery, action, and romance that are woven throughout is fantastic and well written.
I especially found the caste system fascinating. Taya's job as an icarus enables her to mix with the other castes, and she's privy to a lot of information because of this. She's smart and quick thinking.
I sincerely hope that there's another book to make this a series.
Very well done. I would have to call this book 'Chick Lit' but it that shouldn't stop guys for reading it as well. The setting is well thought out. The writing is skillful, vivid, and delightful. The plot is well developed, and the characters are round and full. The recording was extremely well done. We listened to it on a road trip from Orlando to Atlanta, and my wife and I had to put it in the house CD player to finish it because we couldn't wait to see how it turned out. Also, we were able to listen to it with the kids in the car without any problems.
I *really* liked this book!
Taya is an "Icarus" in the mountain city-state of Ondinium. Icari are
sort of flying bike-messengers/mailmen/couriers for the city, but with
a bit more social status than that implies in our world. Ondinium is
apparently the only place in the world where the negative-weight, positive mass
metal "Ondium" can be mined, though it is rare even there. An ondium armature
negates enough weight that Icari can fly with metal wings.
Taya is happy in her job, but yearns to pass her diplomatic exams and see
the world as a (flying) diplomat for Ondinium. However, her life changes
dramatically when she makes a daring rescue during a "wireferry" (the
cable cars which connect the citys different peaks and neighborhoods) crash.
Saving the life of an "Elite" woman and her child propels her into the
affairs of the city's upper-crust and into the heart of the conspiracy
that imperils it.
I'm trying to figure out why I liked this book so well and I think there
are several reasons
1) The setting feels real and lived in. Now perhaps there are many
elements that wouldn't make sense if I thought about them too hard,
but nothing slapped me in the face and said "I'm here to challenge
your suspension of disbelief!". Not only did it feel real, it felt
like a place worth saving, and you could believe the loyalty the
main characters felt for it. No one was blind to the problems of
society, but they all felt they could be addressed in the society's
own context. The police force was shown to be strict but fair, and
not so bound by bureaucracy that they wouldn't deputize the citizenry
when necessary. There was no real democracy, but different interests
were represented on the council, and the press seemed to be completely
free (if no more accurate than our own). Also there was broad
sexual equality and a general lack of obsession with people's
sleeping arrangements. There were obvious borrowings from Republican
Rome, Victorian England, Mandarinism and Hinduism, but I felt they
fell together well.
2) The characters were engaging. Taya is smart and ambitious, but
no steely eyed hero. When circumstances force her to kill someone (a police
officer who mistakenly believes she is trying to destroy the city's great
babbage engine) in self defense, she feels terrible about it. She is
also able to accept her eventual love interest for who he is without trying
to polish all his rough edges. Said love interest is no "love at first
sight" Mr. perfect either. In the "Night Huntress" books I just reviewed,
there's an obvious "something" about the "fate-ed" lover from the get-go.
Here it develops gradually.
3) The plot was interesting. The other "Juno" book I read recently,
_Personal Demons_ was more Supernatural Romance, with the plot designed
to bring the heroine and "hero" together. In _Clockwork Heart_, we get
enough plot that it would work as a "buddy movie" even without the
budding romance.
I would really like to see some more books in this setting.
