Jo Minus Amy eBook Glenis Stott
Like most books that I read, the cover is what attracted me to this book first. “Jo Minus Amy” overlaid atop rose petals, of which only one is in color, deep red – and glistening with dew; or what I thought was dew. It probably is, but it could very well be tears. The cover hinted at a romance, at first glance; but the truth was much more devastating, and much more captivating. This was a book I could not put down or even look away from, not for long at least. It took me two days to read it, and I dreamt of it during the night. Odd – as I read so much, yet the truth. I have two daughters; the eldest is almost 4 and the youngest verging on 2. So young and so vital to everything that is me. In this book by Glenis Stott, Jo, who I assumed was a male by the cover, is a mother facing the unimaginable.11 months ago Jo’s 17 year old daughter, Amy, died suddenly and unexpectedly from a brain hemorrhage. What’s left are pieces Jo can’t grasp, moments of time shattered with memory as the days trudge on and she tries to find who she was, or who she might be now. An ill-fated trip to the woods to end her life results in the acquisition of a new friend, Jamie, a teenager with problems of his own. Jamie’s mother, Kate, soon proves to be a blessing and a friend to Jo, the confidant she desperately needed and didn’t want. Along the way, Jo also fights to remember the wife in her as her husband, Richard, struggles with his own grief – pain from losing his daughter, and pain from watching his wife slip away.
This is a poignant tale of grief, loss, hope, life and brutal truth. I cried, hot tears of pain I can’t imagine – pain I don’t EVER want to imagine. I have been holding my girls a bit tighter since I read this book, my heart a bit heavier. This is far from a light read, but it is a meaningful read.
